WIN Talent Scott Toepfer's Motorcycle Journey

Editorial/commercial photographer and recent WIN Talent Scott Toepfer is taking to the road on his motorcycle for his latest project, It’s Better in the Wind. Inspired by tales of Americans from yesteryear who took to the West in search of a journey, Toepfer will be joined by six other artists, riders and “blue collar intellectuals” as they leave behind creature comforts and hit the pavement with little more than they can carry.

Are you jealous yet? ‘Cause I sure as hell am. The thought of having nothing to answer to other than the road and your bike is certainly an alluring one! Luckily, Toepfer’s photo sensibilities lend themselves nicely to this kind of work, creating (mostly) black-and-whites that satiate our wanderlust needs while keeping us from eating asphalt. Toepfer’s “modern youth” take on the theme will consist of a series of 16″x20″ prints for exhibition, as well as a documentary photobook that he’s hoping to print in large quantities if he receives enough funding. (Kickstarter.com has offered to host the project on their site, so if you’d like to fund the project, or just learn more about it, click here. To see a video “trailer” of the project, click here.)

Toepfer, riding a 1979 Yamaha SR500, will be covering “a couple thousand miles” over much of the Western US, though he tells me, “It will be very California-centered, just because it is our home and there are vast amounts of the state that deserve tons of attention.”

Ride on, Toepfer. We look forward to viewing your great American journey.
